In January 1975, a young mechanic named Ibrahim Koulle took a leap of faith. Working under a local garage owner named Geoff at the time, Ibrahim was offered the opportunity to take over the business. With a deep respect for the trade and an honest approach to customer care, he accepted—and so began the story of Catford Hill Motor Company.
Now, 50 years later, the reins have been passed to his son, Hasan Koulle, who has worked side-by-side with his father since 2006. As Workshop Manager, Hasan carries forward a proud family legacy rooted in trust, expertise, and a deep connection to the Catford community.
From Humble Beginnings to a State of the Art Workshop
“When Dad took over, the business operated out of a yard at Perry Mansions, shared with another company at 115 Catford Hill,” Hasan recalls. “It wasn’t glamorous, but it worked. The goal was always to do good work and grow.”
That growth came steadily over the years. In 1990, Ibrahim made a pivotal move—he purchased the current site at 27 Catford Hill, allowing the business to expand. But the most significant transformation came in 2008 when the old sheds were demolished to make way for a new, modern MOT centre and workshop.
Today, Catford Hill Motor Company is known for high-quality car servicing in Catford, trusted car repairs, and reliable MOT testing. The business has moved with the times, updating both its equipment and its customer outreach. “My Dad always relied on a little ad in the Yellow Pages,” Hasan reminices. “Now we’ve got a website, we’re active on Facebook, and we rank well on Google.”
Adapting to Change, Staying True to Values
In an industry that has transformed beyond recognition over the past five decades, Catford Hill Motor Company has stayed relevant by constantly adapting. “The cars have changed massively,” Hasan explains. “They’re no longer just machines—they’re computers on wheels. Keeping up with all the technology is a real challenge.”
That’s where education comes in. Hasan and his team stay on top of technical developments through training, reading, and knowledge-sharing with other professionals. But even with all the change, one thing has remained constant: the company’s commitment to honesty.
“That’s something my Dad instilled in me from the very beginning,” Hasan says. “We always tell customers exactly what they need, why they need it, and what it will cost. No surprises. That trust is everything.”
Building Community, One Customer at a Time
A big part of Catford Hill Motor Company’s success is its connection to the local community. “Doing a good job is the most important thing,” Hasan says. “But communication is key too—especially in today’s world, where people expect to be kept in the loop.”
The company prides itself on being approachable and inclusive. “Garages can be intimidating places, especially for women. We want everyone to feel welcome here,” Hasan adds. That welcoming atmosphere has earned the garage a loyal following, even appearing as a recommended service on local schools’ and mums’ WhatsApp groups.
The team itself reflects this long-term commitment. Hasan started at the garage after leaving school, training at Bromley College to gain his NVQ Level 2 and 3, followed by his MOT testing licence. William Biles, another key figure, joined the company in 2008 and brings over 30 years of experience to the team.
And the customers? Some have been coming for decades. David Rugg has stayed loyal since the late ‘70s, even after moving away from the area. “We also look after the cars of his children now,” Hasan smiles. “Same with Ken Lewis, Brian Jones, and Chris Rigby. It’s a family thing.”
Looking Ahead - The Next Chapter
So, what does the future hold for Catford Hill Motor Company?
Hasan is realistic about the challenges. “The industry is changing fast. Environmental concerns, the rise of electric vehicles, hybrid systems—everything’s shifting. To stay relevant, we need to keep learning.”
Training will be at the heart of the company’s strategy moving forward. “We’re essentially heading back to the classroom. We need to understand the new technologies coming through, so we’re ready for what’s next.”
